Vol. 88 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Farm Improvement Scheme.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he will state (1) the number of applications received up to September 9th last; (2) the number received since that date, for grants under the Farm Improvement Scheme, 1942-43; and if, in view of the very large number of applicants who for one reason or other failed in having their applications lodged before the appointed date, he would take steps to extend the period within which applications may be made, and arrange for the necessary supplementary estimate sufficient to meet any extra expenditure arising as a result of such extension.

I assume that the Deputy's question relates to the non-congested areas for which the latest date for receipt of applications was 9th September. By that date approximately 15,800 applications had been received. After the date mentioned over 3,500 applications were received. In addition close on 4,000 requests were made for application forms.

The number of applications received in time is sufficient to absorb the amount of money available for grants. Apart from that, any large addition to this number at this stage would create difficulties in regard to the recruitment of the necessary staff and the completion of the necessary inspection work in time. I regret I am unable to agree to the extension of the period within which application may be made.
