Vol. 88 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Discharge of Ganger.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that Mr. Patrick J. Crampton, of Shrule, County Mayo, was discharged from the position of ganger by the Land Commission, and that Mr. Crampton was discharged as a result of his activities in connection with the acquiring by the Shrule Parish Council of certain lands, the property of the Land Commission, for tillage; if he is further aware that Mr. Crampton's action was on the express direction and order of the Shrule Parish Council and in his capacity of honorary secretary to that body; and whether the Minister is prepared to reinstate Mr. Crampton.

Gangers are employed by the Land Commission on a day-to-day basis, as required. In March last the casual employment of Mr. Patrick J. Crampton, and other gangers, ceased owing to slackness of work. Apart from his subsequent activities in connection with the local agitation concerning the O'Brien estate, Shrule, County Mayo, Mr. Crampton's services as ganger were not satisfactory and it is not proposed to re-employ him.
