Vol. 89 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Embankments on County Kerry Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the embankments on the Ventry estate have been broken at two places, Gurrane and Ballymacprior, Killorglin, and that damage has been done to the holdings adjoining the embankments; and whether, in order to prevent further damage, particularly to crops, he will take steps to have the embankments repaired immediately.

The Land Commission are not responsible for the repair or maintenance of the embankments at Gurrane and Ballymacprior on the Ventry estate. On the sale of the estate under the Land Acts a fund, administered by local trustees, was established to assist the tenant purchasers in the maintenance of embankments and sluice-gates at Gurrane East and West, Reen and Ballymacprior. It has, however, been represented on behalf of the trustees and tenants affected that the cost of repairing breaches which have occurred at Gurrane West and Ballymacprior, and also other repairs now necessary, would be beyond the resources of the fund. The works have been inspected and the Land Commission are considering the reports with a view to determining what further assistance, if any, they can give in the case.
