Vol. 89 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bakers' Wages.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the prevailing rates of wages for adult operative bakers in the Cities of Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford, distinguishing between (a) foremen, (b) ovenmen, (c) doughmakers, (d) table hands; and the output of sacks per man on which these wages are based.

The prevailing rates of wages for ovenmen are—In Dublin, 104/- for a 44½-hour week; in Cork, 100/-; in Limerick, 92/6 for a 48-hour week; in Waterford, 95/- for a 47-hour week. For table hands—In Dublin, 91/6 for a 44½-hour week; in Cork, 96/-; in Limerick, 90/- for a 48-hour week; in Waterford, 95/- for a 47-hour week. And for doughmakers—In Dublin, 93/6 for a 44½-hour week; in Cork, 100/-

I have no information as to the rates for foremen in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford, nor as regards the rates payable to doughmakers in Limerick and Waterford.

The wages in Dublin, Limerick and Waterford are not, so far as I am aware, based on the output of sacks of flour per man, but I am advised that the output in Cork is 210 pairs of bread per man with the exception of the first man who is expected to handle 110 pairs.
