Vol. 91 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Military Service Pensions.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the widespread dissatisfaction that exists with regard to the administration of the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; that it is widely alleged that men with long and meritorious service with the I.R.A. have not been awarded pensions or awarded pensions not commensurate with their services, and whether, in these circumstances, he will cause an inquiry to be made into the operation of the Act, and particularly in respect of the definition of "active service" as understood by the referee appointed under the Act.

I am aware that some dissatisfaction has been expressed with regard to the administration of the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. I am not aware, however, that men with long and meritorious service with the I.R.A. have not been awarded pensions or have been awarded pensions not commensurate with their services. I do not propose to cause an inquiry to be made as suggested by the Deputy.

Would the Minister consider the giving of gratuities to some of these people? Many of them, by their service, helped in the establishment of this State. Because of the service they gave, they sacrificed their careers. It is not right that they should suffer because they gave this service. I appeal to the Minister to grant gratuities in these cases.

All claims that come within the terms of the Act will be dealt with on their merits.

The Minister realises that it is extremely hard to understand the Act.
