Vol. 91 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fuel Depots in County Dublin.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state what steps have been taken, or are in contemplation, to establish fuel depots in the small towns in County Dublin which are threatened with a serious fuel shortage so far as the poor are concerned.

It is not intended to extend the scheme to rural areas. The need for ensuring a supply of winter fuel is greatest in the cities and urban districts in the non-turf areas, and it is in these areas that the distribution of fuel is being authorised. Should a shortage such as suggested by the Deputy materialise, the county commissioner has power to deal with the situation.

The Minister must be aware that in many portions of the county there are no lorries operating and it is difficult for the people in these different areas to procure an adequate supply of fuel, apart altogether from the high price they are forced to pay.

I have only to repeat that if there is any danger of a shortage the county commissioner, in whom I have confidence, has power to deal with the whole situation.
