asked the Minister for Finance if he will state with reference to the Barrow Drainage Works for each of the Counties Kildare, Leix and Offaly (a) the total amount paid by county councils under the heading (1) special rate, (2) county at large charge to the Office of Public Works for the years 1938-39, 1939-40, 1940-41, 1941-42, 1942-43; (b) the total amount expended on maintenance each year for the same period.

The following sums have been received by the Commissioners of Public Works, in each of the years cited by the Deputy, from the county councils of Kildare, Laoighis and Offaly in repayment of advances made under the Barrow Drainage Acts, 1927 and 1933:—

I am not in a position to say how much of this rate has been collected.
No expenditure was incurred on maintenance of the drainage works in the years 1938-39 or 1939-40. The expenditure in 1940-41 was £6,929 19s. 5d., in 1941-42 £6,373 14s. 5d. and in 1942-43 £6,856 6s. 4d. In accordance with Section 19 (3) of the Barrow Drainage Act, 1927, a moiety of the expenditure on maintenance is borne on State funds.
Can the Parliamentary Secretary apportion the figure that has been paid between special rate and county-at-large charge, which is really the information I am seeking?
The three county councils are responsible for the collection of a sum of £24,820 12s. 10d. As far as I can make out, the flat rate charge would be the sums that I have given —£7,321 17s. 11d. for Kildare; £7,765 11s. 10d. for Laoghis; £6,483 3s. 1d. for Offaly. The drainage rate payable by those who are assessed would be £2,110 11s. 3d. for Kildare; £2,238 9s. 2d. for Laoighis; and £1,868 15s. 10d. for Offaly.
