That it is expedient that a Joint Committee consisting of seven members of the Dáil and seven members of the Seanad be set up to assist and advise the Ceann Comhairle in the direction and control of the Oircachtas Restaurant.
On this motion, could the House have some information in regard to the functioning of this Committee? I am not aware that it has ever met during the last 12 months. I am aware that there has been a number of complaints in regard to the running of the restaurant, complaints by members of the staff in regard to the way they are treated sometimes. There are other complaints. I am sure nearly every member of the House feels at times that the restaurant is not at all satisfactory.
I think the House should have some information in regard to the manner in which this control is exercised. There is an opinion abroad, and in fact some provincial newspapers have written leading articles alleging, that members of this House are being fed free, gratis and for nothing in the restaurant, whereas, in fact, the prices there are much higher than are charged in any public restaurant in this city.
The Deputy will have an opportunity of raising that matter on the Vote for the Oireachtas. It would be relevant then. Just now it is a question of setting up the Committee.
I would be quite satisfied. I thought this would be the time.
