Vol. 91 No. 10

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milk Supplies.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state what steps he has taken with a view to preventing a shortage of milk in Dublin such as occurred during last January and February.

Arrangements are being made by the Dublin District Milk Board, in the event of a shortage of milk in January and February next, to bring to Dublin as much additional supplies from the creamery areas as can be obtained.

Will the Minister give any assurance that the distribution will work out more equitably?

I have already given that assurance.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the danger of a shortage of milk and of the alleged deterioration in the quality of milk, he will take steps to prevent the export of dairy cows and heifers until the country is adequately restocked.

The export of dairy cows and heifers is controlled as a means of ensuring that adequate stocks are available in this country. It is not proposed to prohibit export, as this trade is a useful incentive to breeders to retain additional heifers for breeding purposes.
