Vol. 91 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Erection of Sea-Wall in Kerry.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what steps have been taken by the Office of Public Works to erect the sea-wall at Ballyea, Spa, Tralee, County Kerry; if he is aware of the great necessity of this proposed work; and if he will state if it will be put into operation immediately.

The Office of Public Works is not responsible for works of this nature. The Land Commission have stated that they have had this proposal examined, and that in their view the high cost of the repairs in relation to the area of land affected would render the scheme altogether uneconomic.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there is good land in that area surrounded by water and does he know what Department is responsible for the repairs of the breaches in the embankments?

I can only tell the Deputy that we are not responsible. We have been informed by the Land Commission that, having examined the place, they consider that the amount of the expenditure would not be warranted, having regard to the area of land involved.

Seeing that we now have a Compulsory Tillage Order, I may say that I know that this is good arable land, and that some Department must immediately attend to the matter of repairing the embankment, if the people concerned are to be enabled to comply with the Tillage Order.
