Vol. 91 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Petrol Supply for Scrap-Iron Buyers.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he is aware that buyers of scrap-iron in country districts, particularly in County Wexford, are considerably handicapped in getting around to collect supplies; and whether, in the interests of local foundries and in view of the national importance of the work, he will grant petrol supply to persons engaged in the business of buying scrap-iron.

I am not aware that buyers of scrap-iron in County Wexford or other country districts are handicapped in getting around to collect supplies to a greater extent than other commercial interests who normally used road transport in the course of their business and who cannot now, because of the supply position, secure their normal requirements of petrol. Limited provision has been made for the collection of scrap-iron. Owing to the petrol supply position, it is not possible to increase the facilities at present allowed.

Does the Minister not think that it would be important to allow a petrol ration to those people who go around to collect scrap iron? If the supplies are not available, local foundries will be closed down. It is not possible to carry more than half a ton by horse and car. Small light lorries would be able to do much more.

If the Deputy is referring to an allocation, of petrol to permit of the transportation of scrap-iron when other means are not available, the answer is, it is allowed. If he is referring to an allocation of petrol to persons who want to go around the country in private cars, seeking out supplies, the answer is, it cannot be allowed.

I am talking of light lorries, not private cars.

I think the light lorry would be the wrong type of lorry to give a permit to for this purpose.

A ton or 30-cwt. lorry.
