Vol. 91 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Clare Reclamation Scheme.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he has received a resolution by the Kilrush Urban District Council requesting that the scheme of reclamation for Pol-na-Sherry Bay be considered, as this scheme would give whole-time employment to a considerable number of men in the surrounding district, reclaim a large area of land, and drain and enhance the value of the bogs and turbary adjacent; and if he will state whether he will give immediate consideration to this matter so as to relieve the present volume of unemployment in the area.

I have seen a resolution from the council, asking that the scheme referred to should be considered for the purpose of providing employment in the district in the post-war period. It is a matter for the county manager, in the first instance, to examine any scheme thought to be suitable for that purpose; but it is doubtful if the reclamation of Pol-na-Sherry Bay would, on examination, be found suitable as it is by no means clear that the benefits which would accrue from the work would justify the cost.

An allocation related to the number of unemployment assistance recipients has already been made for road and other works in the area, in order to provide employment during the present winter season.
