Vol. 91 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Erection of Limekilns in Tipperary.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if any steps have been taken by his Department to have limekilns erected throughout Tipperary, or old ones repaired; and if he will see that at least one limekiln is erected in every parish on account of the present shortage of artificial manure; and further, if he will see that the kilns are worked by county council workers, who are practically idle owing to the insufficiency of road work.

My Department has no centrally administered scheme in connection with the production of lime in County Tipperary. In the North Riding, the county committee of agriculture, whose schemes are subject to my approval, have in force this year a scheme for the making of grants towards the repair of lime kilns in the county. There is no similar scheme in the South Riding. In connection with this matter of the production of lime, the attention of the Deputy is directed to the Emergency Powers (No. 286) Order, 1943, made on the 27th July last, empowering county councils to acquire limestone land and quarries and limekilns; to construct limekilns and to engage in the production of lime for agricultural purposes. Under this Order the Tipperary (N.R.) County Council have requested the county committee of agriculture to obtain from their agricultural instructors and supply to the council a list of kilns which it would be desirable to put into production. It is understood that in the South Riding also, the county council is at present taking action under the Order in question. Any further information regarding the schemes operated under the Emergency Powers (No. 286) Order may be obtained from the county manager.
