asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware of the failure of the sewerage scheme at Mountmellick, and whether, in the interests of the health of the town, he proposes to take immediate action to remedy the situation.

It has been stated in a recent report made by the county engineer to the sanitary authority that the main sewers controlled by the county council are in good working order. It appears, however, that the sewerage connections with some houses, the property of Mountmellick Town Commissioners, are defective. The engineer states that on examination he found that the connecting sewers from 21 houses belonging to the commissioners are faulty and he expressed the view that these sewers should be re-laid as the levels are not correct and there is considerable silting in the sewers. Further, he added that the entire sewerage system in the Emmet Road area should be completely overhauled and that the whole matter is one for the Mountmellick Town Commissioners as they are responsible for the sanitation of houses provided by them under the Housing of the Working Classes Acts. It is understood that the county manager is placing the matter before the town commissioners with a view to obtaining their approval to the expenditure required to defray the cost of the proposal.
