Vol. 92 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Petrol Supply.

asked the Minister for Supplies if there is any truth in the statement which is current recently to the effect that a supply of petrol was pumped into the Liffey; and, if so, if he will make a statement on the circumstances in which the loss occurred.

There is no truth in the rumour that a supply of petrol was lost in the Liffey. On receipt of information in my Department that there was a loss of petrol at the Alexandra Basin, North Wall, official inquiries were immediately made. It was ascertained that the valve on one of the petrol storage tanks was inadvertently left open and that a quantity of petrol was lost through this valve on the premises of the oil distributing company concerned. I am satisfied that the failure to close the valve in time was accidental.
