Vol. 92 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The Sugar Ration.

asked the Minister for Supplies if, in view of the statement of the Minister for Agriculture at a recent meeting that the 1943 beet crop was a most satisfactory one, he will consider the desirability of increasing the sugar ration for 1944.

I consider that it would not be desirable to effect any alteration in the present sugar ration until it is possible to make a reliable estimate of production during the coming season.

Will the Minister, when that estimate has been made, consider the position of farmers who want to save the harvest and work in the bog and who are very short of sugar? Will he make some allowance to those farmers who want to do the harvest and bog-work?

That is a separate question. Heretofore we have not differentiated between classes of the community in distributing the sugar ration, but the position can be and, no doubt, will be examined in detail when it is possible to estimate what the position during the coming season will be.
