Vol. 92 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Maintenance of Bridges in County Longford.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state who is responsible for the repair and maintenance of bridges on the Dungolman river leading from the farm of Mr. Patrick Reilly, Keel, Ballymahon, County Longford, to his farm in Gortmore, Tang, Ballymahon, on which a drainage rate is collected; if he is aware that Mr. Reilly is a substantial farmer and has tillage each side of the river and that the bridges are a danger to himself, his family and live stock; and whether in these circumstances the will see that these bridges are made safe.

The particulars given in the Deputy's question are insufficient for the purpose of identifying the location of the bridges to which he refers. Two accommodation bridges spanning the Dungolman river in the townlands of Keel and Gortmore respectively are, however, included in the works set out in the final award dated 29th September, 1852, for the Dungolman drainage district. The joint drainage committee appointed by the County Councils of Longford and Westmeath is responsible for the maintenance of the district.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary fell me what particular district is responsible, because I understand that the Longford County Council deny responsibility?

According to my information, this particular district was transferred to the councils of Longford-Westmeath some time in 1937, and these councils were to take joint responsibility for looking after the district.
