Vol. 93 No. 6

Committee on Finance. - Butter and Milk Production—Motions.

I move motion No. 14:—

That Dáil Eireann is of opinion that in view of the deterioration of the dairy industry, the resultant inadequate supplies of butter and milk and the cessation of a valuable export trade, it is necessary, in the national interest, to establish this essential industry on such a sound and healthy basis that it will secure our full national requirements of dairy produce together with an export supply of dairy produce and live stock; that with this object in view, a Select Committee of both Houses of the Oireachtas be set up with powers to send for persons, papers and records to examine and report on this problem; and that pending such report, the price at present paid for milk at creameries be maintained for the summer season.

I move:

That Dáil Éireann is of opinion (1) that, in order to cover the increased costs of milk production and of its delivery at creameries, farmers should be paid 1/- per gallon from 1st April to 31st October this year; (2) that as uneconomic cows are mainly responsible for our low average milk-yields, judicious steps should be taken to eliminate gradually such cows from the dairy herds and to provide for replacements by a scheme of loans at a low rate of interest; (3) that the colossal annual wastage in dairy herds through the diseases incidental to milch cows should be reduced to a minimum, and (4) that unless such effective steps are taken immediately to arrest the continuous decline in the industry, there is grave danger of a calamitous shortage of milk and butter, not only in the immediate future, but also after the war.
