Vol. 93 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Household Utensils.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that excessive prices are being charged for delph and cutlery and for household utensils such as pots, kettles, pans and zinc buckets; and if he will take immediate steps to fix prices for all these commodities.

The prices charged by the manufacturers of the articles to which the Deputy refers are subject to control by means of price or profit arrangements with my Department. Owing to the multiplicity of articles involved, control of wholesale and retail prices would present considerable practical difficulty, but the fixing of prices for certain of these articles is contemplated.

The prices of various utensils I have mentioned in the question—kettles, pots, pans and delph—in my part of the country are exorbitant. For an ordinary plain cup and saucer one must pay 2/-. It is time to make some effort to control those prices, which are really outrageous.
