Vol. 95 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post-War Shipbuilding.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the recent statement of the chairman of Irish Shipping, Limited, that it will be necessary to maintain an Irish Mercantile Marine after the war, he will consider entering into discussions with the Government of Northern Ireland with the object of having ships built for Éire in the Belfast shipyards, thus aiding in the provision of employment for Northern Irish workers after the war, and thereby promoting the development of a spirit of goodwill and economic relations between the two parts of Ireland.

The post-war period is, I understand, expected to be one of extreme pressure everywhere in the shipbuilding industry, and the need for any special effort on the part of the Irish Government to direct shipyard employment to any particular area is not apparent.
