Vol. 96 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Veterinary Research.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state with reference to veterinary research (a) what facilities are available and in operation; (b) the number of veterinary surgeons directly employed; (c) the aggregate amount paid in salaries to such officers; (d) the particular work they are engaged on at present; and (e) the amount provided for research for the year 1944-45.

Veterinary research is carried out by my Department at the Veterinary Research Laboratory and lands at Thorndale, Drumcondra, Dublin, and on lands at Lusk, County Dublin.

Five veterinary surgeons are regularly employed at the laboratory and five veterinary inspectors are at present seconded to that institution from the Department's central staff.

The remuneration of the regular staff of veterinary surgeons at the laboratory totalled £3,868 for the year ended 31st December, 1944.

The work of the laboratory is described at pages 73-75 of the Annual Report of my Department for 1943-44.

The amount provided for the Veterinary Research Laboratory for 1944-45 will be found under sub-head E (2) of the Vote for my Department.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he can give comparable figures on an animal population basis showing the number of veterinary surgeons practising in Great Britain, Denmark, New Zealand and Ireland.

In reply to question No. 10, I have given particulars as to the numbers of veterinary surgeons in this country. The number of large domestic animals is approximately 8,500,000. I cannot undertake to supply similar particulars with regard to other countries.
