Vol. 97 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - European Food Shortage.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the shortage of food in Europe, he will consider having potatoes sown in the Phænix Park.

It is now too late to arrange for the planting of potatoes particularly on unbroken grassland. In any event there is not available in the Phænix Park an appreciable area of land suitable for potatoes which, having regard to necessary public amenities, could be used for the purpose.

Has the Minister made any arrangements to introduce a scheme for encouraging greater potato production for the benefit of the starving people in Europe?

Not specifically for that purpose, but appeals have been made to farmers to grow more potatoes and the allotments schemes have been inaugurated during the war for the growing of potatoes for people's households.
