Vol. 98 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Athy Bread Supply.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that there is a shortage of batch bread in Athy, County Kildare, and that the shopkeepers of that town have sent a signed petition to his Department requesting that a licence to bake batch bread be given to a local bakery: and if, in the special circumstances, he will consider granting the licence at an early date.

I have received the petition referred to. I am satisfied that there is no shortage of batch bread in Athy and that the arrangements for supplying the town are adequate. Consequently, I cannot see any grounds for granting a licence to make batch bread to an additional bakery in Athy.

Why do you not let everybody make batch bread?

It is subsidised.
