Vol. 98 No. 1

Written Answers. - Building Industry—Total Employed.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total number of persons (a) skilled, and (b) unskilled, employed in the building industry for the last date on which the information is available.

The weekly average numbers of skilled and unskilled workers employed in the building trade during the year ending 31st March, 1945, estimated from the sales by post offices of supplementary insurance stamps are 6,609 and 5,287 respectively. The terms "skilled worker" and "unskilled worker" are used in the same sense as in the Insurance (Intermittent Unemployment) Act, 1942. It is not possible to give information as to the actual number employed at any given date from this source.
