Vol. 98 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Eire Help for German People.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state (1) if there are any proposals to send food or medical supplies to the people of Germany by the Irish Red Cross or any other charitable organisation; and (2) whether German children may be brought to this country in the same way as French children have been brought.

A certain quantity of foodstuffs has already been sent by the Government, through the International Red Cross Society, for distribution amongst the displaced persons, especially children, in greatest need in Central European countries, including Austria, Germany, Hungary and Poland. A further consignment is being sent at an early date for the same purpose.

The chairman of the Irish Red Cross Society has had conversations with the International Red Cross about the possibility of bringing children here from the areas mentioned, and these conversations are being continued with the representative of the International Red Cross at present in Dublin. Owing, however, to the special difficulties of dealing with the occupied areas in question, it may be some considerable time before it can be stated with certainly that groups of children will be sent out of these areas to countries which are in a position to receive them.
