Captain Giles

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of appointments to the office of (a) county registrar; (b) District Court clerk made since 1933; the number of such appointees who possessed a knowledge of Irish sufficient for the discharge of their work through the medium of that language; and the names of the appointees with the county or district to which appointed.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is, as regards county registrars, 16, and as regards District Court clerks, 47. Of these, seven and 38, respectively, are known to have a sound knowledge of Irish and to be able to read and write the language well, and I have no doubt that a number of them are capable of discharging their duties entirely through Irish. A statement setting out the names of the appointees with the county or district to which they were appointed will be circulated with the Report.
