Vol. 98 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Expenditure on Civil Airports.

asked the Minister for Industy and Commerce if he will state the amount so far expended under all heads on civil airports, distinguishing the amounts expended on constructional works (including maintenance and furnishing of buildings) respectively at (a) Dublin, (b) Foynes, (c) Rineanna; and further, if he will state the amount of revenue arising from (1) dues, (2) all other sources, derived respectively from the civil airports at (a) Dublin, (b) Foynes, (c) Rineanna.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state if it is proposed to recover any, and, if so, what portion, of the expenditure, on civil airports; and further, if he will state, with regard to such expenditure, the rate of interest charged and the conditions, if any, as to repayment of capital.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 4 and 5 together.

The total amount of capital expenditure on civil airports up to 31st March, 1945, was £1,394,533. The expenditure cannot conveniently be segregated as between Dublin, Foynes and Rineanna. The airports are Government property. None of the expenditure is recoverable. The question of repayment of capital and of charging interest does not arise.

The revenue collected during the year ended 31st March, 1945, was as follows:—

During that year air services from Dublin Airport were suspended for a number of months, and scheduled transatlantic services to Rineanna had not been commenced.

Are those receipts treated as Exchequer Extra Receipts or as Grants-in-Aid, or what becomes of the dues received?

They come under the heading of Appropriations-in-Aid in the Department Vote.

The Department of Industry and Commerce.

What are the factors which prevent the cost of the constructional works being allocated as between Dublin, Rineanna and Foynes?

A number of the works, such as meteorological installations and wireless installations, would be common to all three.

Surely it is possible to say what amount of money has been spent on constructional works at Dublin, what amount at Foynes and what amount at Rineanna?

On buildings and similar works, yes.

That is what the Minister was asked.

I was asked the amount expended under all heads.
