asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in relation to cars provided by the State for use by Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries for each of the years 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1945 (to date): (a) the number, make and cost price of all cars in use; (b) the number, make and cost price of cars purchased in each of the years mentioned; (c) the approximate mileage covered annually by each car, and the approximate quantity of petrol used annually; (d) the annual cost of servicing each car; and (e) the number of drivers and other persons employed, and the remuneration paid to these persons.

Thirty Gárdaí are employed whole-time as drivers, etc., in connection with these cars. These are paid at the appropriate rates including transport and plain-clothes allowances. The proportion of the remuneration of the general workshop staff is estimated at approximately £20 a week.
The figures for mileage and petrol consumption are based on the totals recorded for each car. They include the journeys involved in taking cars to and from the Gárda Síochána depôt.
The mileage travelled and petrol consumed on the actual transport of the persons concerned are, therefore, only a proportion of the figures in the statement.
The cars purchased for use by the Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries, when no longer required for that purpose, are used for the general purposes of Gárda transport.
