Vol. 99 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Assembled Cars.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the quota fixed by him for imported assembled cars is exhausted, and that assemblers here are unable to supply Irish assembled cars because of the shortage of supplies of batteries, tyres and tinners' cellulose and if, in view of the fact that many people are anxious to secure new cars and that assembled cars are available for import, he will consider fixing a further quota of such cars.

The fact that Irish assembled cars are not at present available is not due to the shortage of batteries, tyres and cellulose paint. I do not see any necessity for appointing an additional quota of completely assembled cars in the present quota period.

Can the Minister say what is preventing the completion of the assembly?

The inability to procure the car aggregates in sufficient quantity.
