Vol. 99 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Slaughter of Calves.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that a considerable number of calves were slaughtered in 1945, and if, in view of the fact that the export of cattle is one of the principal items in the country's export trade, he will take steps to ensure that there will be no recurrence of this slaughter.

I am aware that the number of calves slaughtered in 1945 was relatively high as compared with recent previous years. As the types slaughtered consist almost entirely of calves which are unsuitable for retention in herds, I see no reason for taking any action in the matter.

Is the Minister aware that the acute shortage of milk and butter at present is due to the unfortunate slaughter of calves some years ago?

I would want to see that brought into relation.

The shortage of butter answers that at the moment.
