Vol. 99 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bonus for Civilians at Army Posts.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state why civilian workers (tradesmen and labourers) employed at the military posts at Lismore and Cappoquin were refused an emergency bonus, even though evidence was submitted that much higher rates of wages were being paid by firms within seven miles of Lismore and Cappoquin for similar work; and if it is now his intention to pay such bonus to the said employees.

Representations for the payment of an emergency bonus have been received in my Department on behalf of civilian tradesmen and labourers employed at the military posts in Lismore and Cappoquin. In the absence of an Emergency Powers Order in that area, no payment of bonus could be authorised. It is not the intention, therefore, to pay bonus to the employees concerned unless a bonus Order should be made in respect of corresponding outside employees in that area.
