Vol. 99 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ready-made Clothing Factories.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of factories started by non-nationals in each of the years 1932 to 1944 respectively in the garment or ready-made clothing trade and, also, if he will state the conditions prescribed for the starting of such factories.

The numbers of new manufacture licences under the Control of Manufactures Acts issued each year from 1932 to 1944 to persons and firms who would not otherwise be entitled to engage in the garment and ready-made clothing trade, were:— six in 1933, three in 1934 and one in each of the years 1938, 1939 and 1944; no such licences were issued in the other years mentioned. Only six of these licences are now in force.

It was prescribed in each case that save where special permission might be given, all the materials used in the production and distribution of the garments would be of Irish origin and that Irish nationals only would be employed.
