Vol. 99 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployed Teachers.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state how many male and female primary national teachers are on the unemployment list.

The number of lay teachers who were unemployed, or employed only as substitutes, on the 31st January, 1946, was as follows:— Men, 35; women, 28.

There were, in addition, 68 men serving as temporary additional assistant teachers; 14 of them in large capitation monastery schools, and 54 in ordinary national schools in which the teaching of Irish is hindered through lack of qualifications amongst the normal staff of the schools. These 68 posts are, as their description indicates, of a temporary nature, and may be discontinued at any time without previous notice. Eight men and 82 women were serving as additional lay assistant teachers in capitation monastery and convent national schools.
