Vol. 99 No. 20

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Children's School Holiday.

asked the Minister for Education whether, in order to mark the nation's appreciation of Michael Davitt's work for Ireland, he will grant a school holiday on Monday, March 25th, so as to give the children an opportunity of sharing in the centenary celebrations, and thus learn more of Davitt's noble work for the industrial workers and farmers in Ireland.

No representations on this subject have been made to me by the managers who are in direct control of the schools, or by the committees organising the centenary celebrations, and I do not propose to grant a school holiday on the 25th instant.

The closing of schools on that date does not commend itself to me as a suitable way of giving pupils of schools a knowledge of Michael Davitt's life and work which the nation gratefully remembers.
