asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the quantity and value of the various materials and articles, required for building purposes, imported during the years 1944 and 1945, and the amount of customs duties collected thereon.

Materials and articles suitable for building purposes are, to some extent, capable of being used for other purposes. As no information is available regarding the extent to which the imports of such materials and articles, during 1944 and 1945, were required for purely building purposes, I am furnishing figures relating to materials and articles suitable for building purposes, thus covering a somewhat wider field than contemplated in the question. The relative figures appear in two lists —viz., a non-dutiable list and a dutiable list—which will be circulated with the Official Report.

Following are the lists referred to.
