Vol. 100 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dalkey Mine Explosion.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he is in a position to state the country of origin of the mine which exploded near the coast at Dalkey, County Dublin, on the 12th March, 1946, and caused much damage to property; and, if so, if he will claim compensation from the Government of that country for the damage.

Enquiries which have been made by the Army appear to establish that the mine which exploded near the coast at Dalkey, County Dublin, on the 12th March was of British origin.

The matter will be taken up with the British Government in the ordinary course with a view to obtaining the recoupment of the amount of any compensation which falls to be made out of State funds.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a number of houses are uninhabitable and that other houses are seriously damaged at Dalkey, County Dublin, as a result of a mine explosion there on the 12th March, 1946; and, if so, if he will give priority for the supply of the necessary building materials, for the repair or reconstruction of these houses, to the owners or their contractors.

Control exists at present only in relation to two building materials, viz., timber and cement. Permits to purchase these materials will be granted where required to repair the damage mentioned in the question.
