Vol. 100 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Subsidies for Soldiers' Married Quarters.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is prepared to sanction the payment of housing subsidies to the Dublin Corporation, on the same lines as subsidies granted for slum clearance, should the corporation decide to house demobilised and other Army personnel and their families, who are forced to vacate official married quarters because of overcrowding or on retirement from the Army.

Section 6 of the Housing (Financial and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1932, limits the payment of contributions to annual loan charges at the higher rate of 66? per cent. to loans borrowed by a local authority for the provision of houses for the accommodation of persons displaced by any operations of such local authority under the Housing of the Working Classes Acts. I have no power to pay contributions at this rate in respect of houses provided for the accommodation of the classes of persons referred to by the Deputy. The maximum contribution that could be made in such cases is 33? per cent. In respect of each dwelling the contribution is of course subject to an overriding limit of cost which is prescribed by regulations. These will be reviewed in connection with any revision of the assistance to be given to housing.
