Vol. 100 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tipperary Road Stewards' Salaries.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health what steps he has taken to implement the unanimous recommendations of the county manager and council of South Tipperary for an increase in the salaries of road stewards, and the establishment of a system whereby they would be superannuated on retirement.

A recommendation was received on the 1st January last from the county manager for the Tipperary (South Riding) County Council in favour of an increase in the basic wages of stewards. This recommendation was not approved as it was considered that the increase should be by way of emergency bonus. An additional bonus of 3/- per week was sanctioned on the 1st instant for stewards or gangers of the county council.

As regards the last part of the question, it is intended to introduce legislation dealing with the superannuation of road workers permanently employed.

Could the Minister give any idea as to the possible date? This Bill was promised on several occasions during the last two years.

My hopes have been so frequently disappointed that I refuse to fix any date in future.

Is a "road steward" a special name for a ganger?

He is a type of ganger. There are many divisions of gangers.
