Vol. 101 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Clay Deposits.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that clay deposits suitable for the manufacture of pottery are available in certain districts in North Mayo; and if his Department will undertake a survey of those districts at an early date with a view to having this industry developed.

I am aware that there are deposits of silica in North Mayo. These deposits have already been surveyed and samples were sent to pottery laboratories in U.S.A. from which reports were duly received. The information available to me does not appear to justify optimism, as to the commercial possibilities of the deposits, but all available information concerning them will be placed at the disposal of any persons interested in their development.
