Vol. 101 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fenit Pier.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that Fenit Pier is in an almost derelict condition and cannot be used for shipping, with the result that, for some years past, serious unemployment has existed amongst the local dockers who, because they live in a rural area, come under the Unemployment Period Orders and are thus debarred from receiving unemployment assistance; and if he will, therefore, consider the question of restoring Fenit Pier to a usable condition as soon as possible.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given by me on the 10th October last to a previous question by him on the subject of Fenit Pier. I explained then that the harbour authority had not made any submission to me in regard to the financing of the proposals put forward by them for the construction of a new viaduct. There has been no change in the position in that respect. The problem of restoring harbour works at Fenit and elsewhere is, however, under examination following the enactment of the Harbours Act, 1946.
