Vol. 102 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishing Industry in West Cork.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that there are about 70 fishermen at Garnish, Allihies, West Cork, whose living is seriously jeopardised by the lack of landing and marketing facilities for their fish; that several inspections have been made and plans formulated for the improvement of the landing facilities, but that nothing has been done to carry these plans into effect; that applications for engined boats have been made by these fishermen without avail; and if he will give his immediate attention to the solving of these problems of lack of landing and marketing facilities which prevent these men from reaping the full benefit of their proximity to the Dursey fishing grounds.

I am aware that representations have been made intermittently during the past few years on behalf of the community of part-time mackerel fishermen living at or near Garnish with regard to the alleged lack of landing and marketing facilities at that place. The provision of improved landing accommodation at a cost reasonably related to the value of the interests to be served is under consideration, and it is hoped to arrange soon for the visit of an engineer who will discuss with the local fishermen the details of the proposals most recently submitted on their behalf. I am asking the Sea Fisheries Association to investigate the marketing difficulties at Garnish with a view to surmounting them as far as possible. I am informed that the provision of motor fishing boats for the many approved applicants already listed on its books constitutes a serious problem for the association in the existing conditions of stringency as to hulls, engines and gear.
