Vol. 103 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grain Seed Imports.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will arrange for the issue of licences to individual farmers and groups of farmers to import seed wheat, seed oats and seed barley for the 1946-47 season.

Official inquiries are at present being made as to the quantities, if any, which may be authorised for export to this country, and pending the result of these inquiries no useful purpose would be served by issuing import licences.

I feel satisfied, however, that appreciable supplies of seed grain cannot be obtained from outside sources for the 1946-47 season.

Accordingly, in order to obviate a shortage next spring, particularly of seed wheat, I would appeal to farmers and seed assemblers to endeavour to secure their requirements in the form of home-produced seed to the greatest possible extent.
