Vol. 103 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Bog Road.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state why the road into Liskeeven Bog, Horse and Jockey, County Tipperary, promised by his Department and mapped out when the Manseragh Going Estate was divided over six years ago, has not yet been provided; if he is aware that the people who cut turf on this bog are all poor people who are dependent on the production of turf for their livelihood; if he is also aware that, owing to the lack of a road, these people were compelled to leave all the turf cut this year on the bog; and if he will take steps to see that this road is completed before March next in order that these people may have a chance of saving their turf.

My information is that the Land Commission gave no undertaking to metal the passages into Liskeeven Bog. The existing passages are reasonably effective for the purposes for which they are intended and it would not be practicable to undertake an expensive scheme of road making having regard to the extent of the turbary.

I have no evidence to support the Deputy's contention that none of the turf cut on this bog during last season could be removed.
