Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Allocation of Sugar.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total amount of sugar sent by Ireland to the International Red Cross; whether any sugar was sent or exported to any other place since 1940; and also, if he will state how such sugar was so allocated, the names of the countries who secured it, and the amount sent to each country.

The total quantity of sugar sent by this country in the years 1945 and 1946 to the International Red Cross is 9,500 tons. In addition 10,450 tons have been consigned direct to certain other European countries for relief purposes. There have been no other exports of sugar since 1940.

The sugar sent to the International Red Cross was allocated by that body as follows:—

A balance of 142 tons is being held by the society as a reserve.
