Vol. 104 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tenancy of Lodge.

asked the Minister for Finance if there is any precedent for the granting of the tenancy of Bessboro' Lodge to Mr. D. Carroll, whose employment is that of relief constable in Phoenix Park.

The answer is in the affirmative.

What is the precedent for giving a lodge to a man who is acting as relief constable in Phoenix Park?

It is the normal procedure. When a relief constable is appointed, if a lodge is vacant, he is given it.

Was there ever a lodge vacant when a relief constable was appointed?

Can the Parliamentary Secretary state when such procedure was adopted?

It is the usual procedure.

Was a relief constable ever resident in this lodge before?

His predecessor in this case was not a relief constable but the man who was given the subsequent appointment refused the lodge and this relief constable was appointed to it.

I am asking if this lodge was ever occupied as part of the remuneration of a relief constable until it was occupied by Mr. Carroll, or is Mr. Carroll the first relief constable to have this lodge as part of his emoluments?

This lodge was offered to another appointee and he refused it. The practice has been to give these cottages to that particular type of appointee.

Was a relief constable ever resident in that lodge before?

I cannot answer that question without notice.
