Vol. 104 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Deepening of County Mayo River.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will arrange to have undertaken at once the work of deepening of the Erriff River, County Mayo, in view of the extensive annual losses of stock, and flooding of arable land and boglands, which this river causes to property of farmers whose lands adjoin it.

Mr. Boland

It is unlikely that a drainage scheme for the Erriff River catchment will be considered at any early stage of the arterial drainage programme.

Can the Minister say why?

Mr. Boland

It is not considered an urgent problem. I understand it is a minor catchment area and it is not considered sufficiently important to get priority. There are other catchment areas which more urgently require attention.
