Vol. 105 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Wexford Military Service Pension Claims.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Defence whether he has received an application for a military service pension from Mr. Martin Dunbar, formerly of Ferns, County Wexford, now residing at Railway Road, Gorey; whether the pension has been granted; if not, whether he is aware that Mr. Dunbar joined the Volunteers in 1913; that prior to and during Easter Week, 1916, he was engaged in the manufacture of munitions for the North Wexford Brigade; that he was on duty during Easter Week and under instructions to defend his post by force of arms; that he continued to be actively engaged with the I.R.A. until the Truce in 1921, being brigade adjutant during the period 1917 to 1921; and whether, in these circumstances, he will state the grounds on which Mr. Dunbar's application was refused.

Mr. Martin Dunbar, Railway Road, Gorey, applied under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934, but his application was refused because the Referee reported that Mr. Dunbar is not a person to whom the Act applies.

Three appeals on behalf of Mr. Dunbar against the findings of the Referee were considered but the additional evidence which was submitted did not warrant the reopening of the case.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Defence whether he received an application for a military service pension from James Gleeson, Esmonde Street, Gorey; whether the pension has been granted; if not, whether he is aware that Mr. Gleeson took part in the Easter Week Rising at Enniscorthy and was actively engaged in the I.R.A. up to 1921; and whether he will state the grounds on which Mr. Gleeson's application was refused.

Mr. James Gleeson, Esmonde Street, Gorey, applied for a pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934, but his application was refused because the Referee reported that Mr. Gleeson is not a person to whom the Act applies.

No appeal was made by Mr. Gleeson, or on his behalf, against the findings of the Referee and, as my power to request the Referee to review his report has been withdrawn by Section 5 of the Military Service Pensions (Amendment) Act, 1945, his report is now final and conclusive.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Defence if he is now in a position to give a decision on the claim of Denis Kavanagh, Cronecribbon, Inch, County Wexford, for a military service pension.

The additional evidence submitted by Mr. Denis Kavanagh, Cronecribbon, Inch, County Wexford, in support of his appeal against the findings of the Referee on his application under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934, has been considered, but was not of a nature to warrant the reopening of his case.
