Vol. 105 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Mayo Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that congestion exists in the townland of Rosmindle, Kilmeena, Westport, County Mayo; and if he will take steps to acquire portion of the farm of 80 acres of Mr. King, Westport, which is in this locality, for the relief of these congests.

The Land Commission are considering the feasibility of acquiring part of Mr. King's land at Money for the relief of congestion at Rosmindle, but it is not yet possible to say what action can be taken.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that Mr. Fair, Ummoon, Foxford, County Mayo, is in possession of 200 acres of land; and if he will acquire portion of this land for the relief of the small landholders of the area.

The Land Commission have no proceedings in hand for the resumption of part of Mr. Fair's land, but the case has been noted for inquiry when circumstances permit.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that there are five untenanted holdings, comprising 72 acres, in the townlands of Boleyard and Rathruane, Shraheens, Balla, County Mayo; and if he will acquire these lands for the relief of the congestion which exists among the small farmers of the locality.

It is not possible from the particulars given to identify definitely the five holdings the Deputy has in mind. If he will indicate the name of the landowner and official townland name in each case, I shall endeavour to let him know the position.

Is the Minister not aware that the lands concerned are the holdings of five migrants and that they have been in the possession of the Land Commission for some time?

I am not talking about migrants. I have said that I cannot identify these holdings from the particulars given by the Deputy. As soon as the Deputy furnishes the necessary particulars, the information which he seeks will be forwarded to him.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that Patrick Daly is in possession of approximately 100 acres of untenanted land at Bunnavaunish, The Neale, County Mayo; that Mrs. Mary Morrin is in possession of approximately 32 acres of untenanted land at Cahernacole, The Neale; and if he will take steps to acquire these lands for division.

Mr. Daly and Mrs. Morrin are tenants of holdings in the townlands mentioned. The Deputy's representations have been noted by the Land Commission.

asked the Minister for Lands if he has taken any further steps to acquire the lands of Garrett Nally, Roundford, Hollymount, County Mayo, and of James Joseph Hession, Roos, Annfield, Hollymount, for redistribution among the small holders of the locality.

The case of Mr. Garrett Nally is under consideration by the Land Commission. Mr. Hession's case has been considered and the Land Commission have no present intention of acquiring any part of his lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that congestion exists in the townland of Drunganagh, Manulla, Castlebar, County Mayo, and that lands there are still held on the rundale system; further, that there are three untenanted holdings in this townland; and if he will acquire same for the relief of the congests in the area.

I replied at length to a similar question by the Deputy last May and I would refer him to that reply for particulars of the Land Commission's proposals concerning the rearrangement of holdings and relief of congestion in Drunganagh and other neighbouring townlands. At the present time, the Land Commission are actively considering the possibility of resuming three non-residential holdings in Drunganagh.

Would the Minister say what he means by "actively considering"?

The Deputy should understand the meaning of that term better than any Deputy in the House. He must know very well what it means to be inactive.

You should, anyhow.
