Vol. 105 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prison Administration.

asked the Minister for Justice whether his attention has been directed to a statement that he had refused a request from a pregnant woman prisoner that she be allowed on parole so that her baby might be born outside prison walls; also to a statement that no official information concerning prisons has been issued since 1938; and if he will state whether these allegations are correct.

I have seen these statements. They are both incorrect. In the circumstances referred to in the first statement women prisoners are always removed to an outside hospital. In the particular case to which I think the statement was intended to refer the woman was so removed on the 30th March and the baby was born in hospital on the 17th April.

As regards the second statement the published reports cover the period up to the end of the year 1944.
