Written Answers. - Gifts to Europe.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state the particulars, as to quantity and value, of each category of goods sent to relieve necessitous persons in Europe, under the approved scheme, in the financial years 1945-46 and 1946-47; and whether, in addition to gifts sent, there were any deliveries under these schemes by way of loan or sale.

No deliveries were made under the approved schemes by way of loan. The values shown for horses and cattle delivered under the approved scheme for 1945-'46 do not include the cost of 1,726 horses and 9,536 cattle sent to Holland, Belgium and France and paid for by those countries. All relief supplies delivered to Belgium were paid for by the Belgian Government. The French Government has also expressed a desire to pay for certain relief supplies sent to France. The total expenditures shown above do not include freight, insurance and distribution charges, which amount to £75,000 in the case of the approved scheme for 1945-'46, and £133,700 in the case of the approved scheme for 1946-'47.
